The original name for the character Jason King was Robert Cullingford. Instead of a novelist, he was a criminology professor at Oxford. Peter Wyngarde (the actor who portrayed Jason) suggested the change in names and occupations to series creator Dennis Spooner. |

The theme to Department S was composed by Edwin Astley. Astley composed the theme music for a number of ITC shows, including Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), Danger Man, and The Saint. He also had a famous son-in-law: Pete Townshend, the guitarist/songwriter of The Who. |
