Beareded record producer Mitch Miller was responsible for a large proportion of America's popular music during the 1950s. As head of recording for mighty Columbia Records, he launched literally dozens of stars and trends in music, and even had a choral hit under his own name ("The Yellow Rose of Texas" in 1955). But Mitch didn't like rock 'n' roll, and when the teen beat began swamping the business in teh late 1950s his kind of music - melodic and stylish - went into a severe decline. In 1958 he conceived the idea of packaging "Sing-along" LPs consisting of old favorites with the words printed on the album cover so the listener could sing along with the chorus. This ran contrary to everything that was happening in popular music, but it found a large, obviously frustrated audience, and the albums became enormous sellers. In 1961 Miller tried the idea on television. Overnight, Mitch Miller, who had for decades been a behind-the-scenes man, became a national celebrity. During the first season his show alternated with The Bell Telephone Hour. It became such a large ratings success that when it returned in the fall of 1961 it was a weekly show. Old favorites and some currently popular songs were sung by Mitche's Sing Along GAng, the preteenage Sing Along Kids, and by featured vocalists doing solos. Mitch himself said very little, simply standing there waving his baton. For all the group songs, the lyrics would be flashed on the screen so that the home audience could also sing along. In addition to the regulars, occasional guest stars and lavish production numbers were a part of the show. Three of Mitch's "discoveries," Leslie Uggams, Diana Trask, and Sandy Stewart, went on to considerable success in the music business.
In 1966 summer series was made up entirely of reruns. |
