The second run of the Garry Moore variety series ran very successfully for six seasons in teh late 1950s and early 1960s. Among other things, it made a star out of Carol Burnett, brought back Allen Funt's Candid Camera (as a regular feature), and showcased many fine musical and comedic talents. And then there was, of course, the friendly humor of the bow-tied, crew-cut Moore himself. From 1958 to 1963 the highlight of teh show was "That Wonderful Year," consisting of film clips, comedy sketches, and production numbers based on the events and styles of a given year. This often filled from one-third to one-half of the show.
The Garry More Show left the air in 1964, not because of low ratings but because Garry wanted to get away from the weekly grind and have some time to relax. After two years of well-earned rest (he had begun on network readio in 1939 and had been on television continuously since 1950) Garry returned in teh fall of 1966 as host of a program featureing Durward Kirby and a rotating cast of comedians and guests. This was short-lived, however (partially due to the withering competition of Bonanza), and thereafter Garry was known primarily as a daytime TV personality. The pace of the early (1950-1951), live Garry Moore Show was slow and relaxed, and very informal. Included were songs, poems, comedy sketches, chats with regulars and guests, and anything else that came to mind while the show was on the air. Ken Carson and Denise Lor were the featured vocalists while Durward Kirby doubled as announcer and comedian. The program was simul-cast on television and radio, five days a week, during the summer of 1950. In August 1950 the Wednesday 7:00-7:30 P.M. telecast was moved (and expanded) to 8:00-9:00 P.M., to fill in for the vacationing Arthur Godfrey, who normally occupied that time slot. The fall of 1951 version of The Garry Moore Show, in the same format and with the same regulars, was aired once a week under the title The Garry Moore Evening Show, to distinguish it from Garry's highly successful daytime show on CBS. |
