> Description
This was a highly successful spin-off of CBS' popular big-money quiz show The $64,000 Question. Any of the winners from the original show whose earnings had been at least $8,000 were eligible to be challenged on this series, in the field of knowledge in which they had already demonstrated their skill. The same questions were asked of champion and challenger, each in a separate isolation booth. If one of them missed a question at any level, and the other answered it correctly, the loser was then eliminated. The contestant who had answered correctly continued alone until he also missed a question, quit, or reached the $64,000 question. In any event, he was guaranteed no less than the amount at which he had defeated his opponent. A successful challenger could be challenged by others. on occasion a defeated champion returend as a challenger and won. Through this format, contestants could multiply their winnings from a prior round several times over.

The biggest winner in the era of big-money quiz shows became a regular on this show. Teddy Nadler was a $70-per-week civil service clerk from St. Louis who happened to have a photographic memory. He had, apparently, memorized a complete encyclopedia and could dredge up the most obscure information. By the time The $64,000 Challenge left the air in 1958, he had won $252,000 and was still going strong. He became such a celebrity on the show that he was often competing with two or three different people, on totally unrelated topics, all at the same time.
