The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports was one of the earliest television programs ever broadcasted. Its earlier incarnation, called Cavalcade of Sports, ran on local television in the mid-1940s, and first made it to NBC national broadcasting in 1946. Despite the implication that several sports were covered, in fact boxing was the only sport that was shown.
The show appeared on Monday nights from the St. Nicholas Arena in New York City, and from Madison Square Garden on Fridays. Some of the biggest names in boxing appeared on the program. Bob Stanton was the original announcer, but he was replaced by Ray Forrest in 1948. Jimmy Powers took over the role in 1949, and remained until the show went off the air in 1960.
