Judging Amy starred Amy Brenneman as a single mother who has left New York behind to become a Family Court judge in Hartford, Connecticut. Playing Judge Amy Gray, a newly divorced single mother raising her young daughter, Lauren.

Due to financial strain, at first, they live with Amy's very opinionated mother Maxine (Tyne Daly), a social worker for the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Family Services. Maxine, a widowed mother of three, makes the Gray home a never ending house of chaos. The rest of Amy’s family is rounded out by her younger brother Vincent, her older brother Peter, Peter’s wife Gillian, and her cousin Kyle. Assisting Amy in the courtroom are her Court Services officer, “CSO” Bruce Van Exel and her eager court clerk turned lawyer, Donna Kozlowski. All characters have challenges in their lives that is also shown in the episodes.

The show was based on the real-life story of Brenneman's mother, who was a Family Court judge in Connecticut. The show focuses on three generations of women living together as they confront the personal and professional predicaments in their changing, demanding lives. Like many dramas on prime time, this show aired episodes taken directly from the news and tackled taboo subjects.

After six seasons, the show was canceled by CBS on May 18, 2005. It still had solid ratings in its time slot, but the network felt the other pilots for the new season would garner even better ratings. And I personally think they should have been “over ruled” in their decision.
