The Sanford Arms was an attempt to continue the long-running success of "Sanford & Son" without Redd Foxx or Demond Wilson. The actors had left earlier for different reasons. Fred's old army buddy, Phil Wheeler, comes to run the Sanford Arms hotel after Fred and Lamont moved to Arizona (it was stated in the show that they left due to Fred's health). Bubba is still around, only now he is the hotel's bellboy. Esther also frequents the hotel, becoming the star of the show in Fred's absence. This was not enough to save the series, and after only four episodes, it was pulled from the air. The Sanford Arms has since been rerun on BET but is not airing at this time. Though it failed, it would not be the last attempt at a revival. In 1980, Redd Foxx returned with the series "Sanford". It had more success, running two seasons.
