Of the two billion four hundred million people
populating the world in 1955, only nineteen of
these were worth five hundred million dollars or
more. One such man was John Beresford Tipton,
manufacturer, and multimillionaire. Residing at
Silverstone, his sixty-thousand-acre estate, Tipton
conducted his business activities and lived his
life of treasured seclusion. Upon doctor's orders
that he find a means of relaxation, he undertook
a most unusual hobby. He decided to make his hobby
"a chess game with human beings." Tipton told his
executive secretary and confidant, Michael Anthony,
"I'm going to choose a number of people for my
chessman and give them each a million dollars. No
one is ever to know that I am the donor."
Each week Michael Anthony would mysteriously present a tax-free cashier's check for one million dollars to an unsuspecting individual. The stories disclose whether the money helped or hindered their lives. Show Description Credit: Tim's TV Showcase |
