The 30 minute sitcom evolved from sketches on "The Carol Burnett Show" and, indeed, Carol and fellow cast member Harvey Korman made guest appearances during the first 2 years of the show (1983-1985). In 1985, Rue McClanahan's character, Aunt Fran, choked to death on a fish bone in a restaurant. Simultaneously, Sonja and Buzz moved away and grandson Bubba, son of Ed and Eunice (Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett--no longer making guest appearances), came to live in Mama's household along with chronic losers Vinton and Naomi. The series ended with the birth of Vint and Naomi's daughter in 1990, whom they named baby Thelma.
