'This Is Your Life' Creator Edwards Dies

(Posted November 17, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

Ralph Edwards, a broadcaster who moved smoothly from radio to television and created one of TV's iconic early shows, "This Is Your Life," has died.

The 92-year-old Edwards died Wednesday (Nov. 16) of heart failure in Los Angeles.

He is survived by his son, Gary, who is executive producing the new version of "This Is Your Life," and daughters Laurie and Christine.

Edwards' broadcasting career spanned more than seven decades, beginning in 1929 when he was a high-school student in Oakland, Calif. He became nationally known in the 1940s as the host of the game show "Truth or Consequences," which made the move to television in 1950 and was popular enough in both formats to cause a New Mexico town to change its name to Truth or Consequences.

He's probably best known, though, as the host of "This Is Your Life," which originally aired on NBC from 1952-61 (syndicated versions of the show also aired in the 1970s and '80s). The show -- which is being revived at ABC, with Regis Philbin as host -- told the life story of its subjects, some famous and some ordinary citizens.
