ABC Reincarnating 'This Is Your Life'
(Posted August 30, 2005 by Leah Yoakum) LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) One of television's early unscripted hits -- and one that would seemingly fit in with the current crop of tearjerker reality shows -- may be headed back to the small screen. ABC is working on a 21st-century version of "This Is Your Life," the 1950s staple in which host Ralph Edwards surprised people ranging from ordinary Joes to big-name celebrities with presentations of their life story. Fox Television Studios will produce the updated show; details are being kept quiet for now. "This Is Your Life," which began as a radio show in the late 1940s, ran on NBC from 1952-61 and finished in the Nielsen top 20 in several of those years. Edwards also hosted a syndicated version in the early '70s and produced another that ran in syndication in 1983-84. The show frequently played up emotional moments in the subject's life, with surprise guests from the person's past filling in parts of the story. In that respect, the show would seem to be a good fit with ABC's brand of heartstring-tugging unscripted shows, such as "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Edwards' son, Gary Edwards, will be among the executive producers of the new version of "This Is Your Life," according to the showbiz trade papers.
