Garrett Reignites Talk of 'Raymond' Spinoff

(Posted September 20, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES ( Backstage after the Emmy Awards, "Everybody Loves Raymond" star Ray Romano was talking about how the show's win for outstanding comedy series after its final season was bittersweet.

His on-screen brother and foil, Brad Garrett, interrupted him. Hoisting his own Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy, Garrett said, "You know, we should try to be a little funny because there may be a spinoff."

The line got a laugh in the press room, but Garrett may not have been entirely joking. According to The New York Times and the showbiz trade papers, talks of a series following Garrett's sad-sack Robert Barone have gained momentum in recent weeks.

A spinoff would likely move Robert and his wife, Amy (Monica Horan), away from the rest of the Barone family. Fred Willard and Georgia Engel, who played Amy's parents on "Raymond," could reprise their roles in the new show, as could Chris Elliott, who played her layabout brother. Garrett tells the Times that "Raymond" co-creator Phil Rosenthal would likely be involved as well.

Garrett acknowledged at the Emmys Sunday (Sept. 18) that "a lot of things have to come together" before the idea gets off the ground, but the news reports say CBS and the actor have made substantial headway toward a deal in recent weeks. CBS has confirmed that talks are ongoing, but the network says nothing has been finalized.
