'Idol' Adds Two More Audition Rounds

(Posted September 21, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) After canceling auditions in Memphis, Tenn., in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the producers of "American Idol" have added two new cities to the tryout schedule.

The singing competition, which will return to FOX in January, will complete its search for potential finalists and horrifically bad singers to make fun of in the opening episodes with open auditions in Greensboro, N.C., and Las Vegas.

The North Carolina auditions are set for Monday, Oct. 3 at the Greensboro Coliseum. The show will roll into Sin City a week later for tryouts at the Las Vegas Convention Center. As with last year, "American Idol" is open to people between the ages of 16 and 28; details are available at idolonfox.com.

The show was originally set to hold auditions in Memphis on Sept. 5, midway through a six-city tour that also included stops in San Francisco, Austin, Boston, Denver and Chicago. Following Hurricane Katrina, however, Memphis became a destination for thousands of evacuees from the Gulf Coast region, and the show's producers thought it best not to distract from relief efforts underway there.

FOX says the Greensboro and Las Vegas auditions will be the final chances for those hoping to make it onto season five of "Idol."
