'Idol' Producers Cancel Memphis Tryouts

(Posted September 2, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) As the city of Memphis, Tenn., takes in evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, the producers of "American Idol" have decided to cancel their stop there on the show's audition tour.

Tryouts for the fifth season of the FOX show were to have taken place Monday (Sept. 5) at the FedEx Forum, the arena that's home to the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. But given the disaster relief efforts under way in the city, as well as thousands of people who have fled Gulf Coast states for Memphis, "Idol" decided not to add a further burden to the city's infrastructure.

"Out of respect for the city's citizens, their public services, and the need to focus public safety efforts on the victims, this decision was made," FOX says in a statement. The show's producers say they hope to make Memphis an audition stop next season.
