Green Day Caps Weird VMA Weekend

(Posted August 30, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES ( Hurricane Katrina's aftermath and Suge Knight's leg kept a cloud hovering over the MTV Video Music Awards, but the annual spectacle turned into Green Day's night Sunday (Aug. 28).

The punk band won seven of the eight awards for which it was nominated, including the top prize, video of the year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." "It's great to know rock music still has a place on MTV," Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong said in accepting another of the song's awards, for best rock video.

The VMA show, hosted by the "P"-free Sean "Diddy" Combs, came off three days after Hurricane Katrina blew through South Florida, killing 11 people. Several events leading up to Sunday night's show were cancelled, although as the weather cleared over the weekend, a number of parties kicked back into gear.

Then, early Sunday, hip-hop mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg at a party in Miami Beach hosted by rapper Kanye West, whose "Jesus Walks" won best male video at the awards. No arrests have been made yet, and according to several news reports, almost no one at the crowded club reported seeing the shooting.

Despite all that, the awards still managed to remain festive. In addition to Green Day, Kelly Clarkson, Gorillaz, Missy Elliott and Gwen Stefani also won multiple awards, and performance highlights included MC Hammer retaking the stage to do "U Can't Touch This" to 50 Cent unleashing a tirade at rival rapper Fat Joe during a medley of several songs.
