'Biggest Loser' Dispels Weight Loss Myths

(Posted July 26, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES ( On the one hand, it's easier to stick to a diet plan if your significant other doesn't make a habit of eating ice cream sundaes in front of you at 11 o'clock at night. On the other, it can be equally frustrating when you both start a program and the weight falls off him while you struggle to lose half-a-pound.

According to the producers and trainers of NBC's "Biggest Loser," this doesn't mean that men naturally lose more weight faster than women. Taking steps to the prove this, the second season of the hit reality show will have the two teams divided down gender lines, with the women being trained by Bob Harper and the men getting whipped into shape by Jillian Michaels.

While the pound number will provoke a Pavlovian reponse to dieters everywhere, percentage is what really counts.

"If you're a 300-pound guy and you lose 30 pounds, you've lost 10 perecent," says Executive Producer J.D. Roth. "If you're a 200-pound woman and you've lost 10 percent, you've lost 20 pounds."

Changing the perception from pounds to percentage is just for starters. Those who tell themselves that weight loss should be kept to a couple of pounds a week are actually confusing "realistic" with "healthy."
