Spike TV Collars 'Shield' Reruns

(Posted July 18, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) In a syndication first, Spike TV has picked up rerun rights to a show -- "The Shield" -- that airs on a rival cable network.

Sony Pictures TV, which produces the FX series along with Fox Television Studios, has sold the rights to "The Shield" to Spike TV for a reported six-figure sum per episode. Spike will begin weekly airings of the series in March.

The deal marks the first time a series that originates on a basic-cable network has been sold in syndication to another basic-cable net. HBO's "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City" have had their rerun rights sold to other cable networks, but as HBO isn't supported by advertising, there was no danger of repeats competing with first-run episodes for ad dollars.
