Turkey Day is also TV Day

(Posted November 20, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

Turkey Day is also TV Day for a lot of people, as they fit in tube time around making the stuffing and wrapping the leftovers.

It's also a touchstone of sorts for actor John O'Hurley, who's had a busy year since he was host of "The National Dog Show" last Thanksgiving Day on NBC.

But first, here's a look at what else is airing on Thursday:

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (NBC): Airing just before "The National Dog Show," the 78th anniversary of the festive fixture that traditionally rings in the holiday season features marching bands, floats, performances by music and Broadway stars and of course, those huge floating balloons. LeAnn Rimes joins Mickey Mouse and other Disney icons aboard the S.S. Celebration showboat float.

"The Thanksgiving Day Parade on CBS": Live in all time zones except Pacific, the eye network's parade coverage features Hannah Storm and Dave Price of "The Early Show" as hosts, with Gary Valentine ("The King of Queens") reporting live from the parade route. Musical performances include Kenny Chesney and Big & Rich.

"The Man Who Saved Christmas" (CBS): Getting the jump on holiday movies, this 2002 film stars Jason Alexander, Ed Asner and Kelly Rowan in the true story of inventor and toymaker A.C. Gilbert.

"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (ABC): This 1973 animated special finds the luckless Charlie Brown and Peanuts gang trying to whip up a memorable Thanksgiving, but ultimately learning that the day is about more than turkey and pumpkin pie.

"Finding Nemo" (ABC): Pixar Animation Studios brought an ocean to life in this 2003 computer-animated hit, which follows a determined clown fish named Marlin and his memory-impaired pal, Dory, as they search for Marlin's son, Nemo, who's trapped in an aquarium.

As for O'Hurley, the silver-haired stage and TV veteran was well-known for playing J. Peterman on "Seinfeld" but waltzed to fame this past summer on ABC's surprise reality hit "Dancing With the Stars." In partnership with statuesque professional-dancer Charlotte Jorgenson, O'Hurley battled his way to a runner-up finish in the competition, losing in a controversial decision (and losing 20-plus pounds along the way) to "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco and partner Alex Mazo.

The furor was so great that ABC had to bring the two couples back in a dance-off to be decided by viewer voting, which O'Hurley won in a squeaker.

On this day in a photography studio in Burbank, Calif., O'Hurley is at work on a photo shoot for this year's two-hour "National Dog Show" special.

Looking trim and dapper in black, O'Hurley strikes a dance pose under a chandelier, with a golden Afghan hound in his arms.
