The N Teams Up with 'Karate Kid' Macchio

(Posted September 2, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES ( Ralph Macchio, who played teenage characters well into his 20s, is joining forces with a network aimed at actual teens.

Macchio has signed a development deal with The N, the nighttime incarnation of cable network Noggin, to create a new original series for the network. He'll stay behind the camera, however, as he develops a drama about two runaways.

"We are honored to be working with Ralph on this new project" says Amy Friedman, head of development at The N. "As a father of a teenager and an icon in the teen landscape, he truly understands how to tell meaningful stories to this audience."

The show will be Macchio's first stab at solo writing and producing for television; he's also working on a comedy pilot called "The Ralph Show" with "Malcolm in the Middle" exec producer/director Todd Holland. The "Karate Kid" star also wrote and directed a short film called "Love Thy Brother" that was screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

Macchio guest-starred as himself on HBO's "Entourage" earlier this summer, goofing on his prior fame in a subplot involving Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) and the Playboy mansion. In addition to the "Karate Kid" movies, his credits include "My Cousin Vinny" and "The Outsiders."
