Led by nine of the 10 most-watched shows (and six of the top 10 among adults 18-49), CBS won the week of Aug. 22 in households, total viewers, adults 18-49 (tied with Fox), and adults 25-54. CBS has extended its winning streak to 13 consecutive weeks in total viewers, and nine among adults 25-54. Fox, which benefited by a growing So You Think You Can Dance, House's best performance in eight weeks, and continued momentum on Sunday, took top-rated honors in adults 18-34, while tying CBS for No. 1 among adults 18-49. Fox has now ranked first in adults 18-34 and teens 12-17 for 33 straight weeks. Year-to-year, Fox increased by margins of 10 to 38 percent, while CBS was close to year-ago levels.
Although ABC finished no higher than No. 3 for the week, the network remained on the rise, building by as much as 24 percent. UPN was close to year-ago levels, while the WB slid from 19 to 30 percent in the five surveyed categories. Since sinking NBC had The Summer Olympics in the year-ago mix, comparisons this week are obviously not valid.
Here are the final national ratings for the week of Aug. 22, 2005 (with percent change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses), followed by the top-rated programs of the week, and the individual new summer program tallies. Keep in mind that the year-ago week featured the Summer Olympics on NBC.
