(Posted September 9, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Comedian Steve Harvey and singer/actress Queen Latifah will host BET's telethon for victims of Hurricane Katrina, and a deep lineup of celebrities will be on hand as well.

BET's "S.O.S. (Saving Ourselves)" telethon will begin at 6 p.m. ET Friday (Sept. 9) with a benefit episode of the cable network's music show "106 & Park." That will lead into the 2 1/2-hour telethon, airing live (tape-delayed on the West Coast) at 7:30 p.m.

Part of BET's broadcast will overlap with the multi-network "Shelter from the Storm" benefit, which airs at 8 p.m. ET Friday, and several celebrities, including Chris Rock, Alicia Keys, Morgan Freeman and Kanye West, are slated to appear on both shows.

The "S.O.S." lineup also includes New Orleans natives Aaron Neville, Master P, Wynton Marsalis, David Banner and Juvenile, along with Jamie Foxx, Jay Z, Nelly, Usher, D.L. Hughley, Ciara, Pharrell Williams, Brandy, Samuel L. Jackson, Ice Cube and Patti LaBelle, among others. The telethon will also include messages from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and participation by members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Proceeds will go to American Red Cross relief efforts in the region. Viewers can donate by calling (888) BET-3598 or online at www.bet.com/sos. The network is also holding an online auction of items donated by celebs including Mariah Carey, the Beastie Boys and 50 Cent.
