Reality is good for CBS on Tuesday

(Posted September 7, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

CBS' summer reality series "Big Brother 6" and "Rock Star: INXS" showed some life on Tuesday as they moved closer to their finales later this month.

The 9 p.m. edition of "Big Brother" was the most-watched show of the night, even as CBS and NBC kicked off the evening with newsmagazine coverage of the crisis in the Gulf Coast region wrought by Hurricane Katrina.

"Big Brother" drew 8.1 million viewers and 3.4 rating/9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. "Rock Star" followed at 10 p.m. with an average of 6 million viewers and 3.1/8 in the demo.

CBS led the 8 p.m. hour in total viewers with its "48 Hours: Disaster in the Delta" special (7.9 million, 2.2/7) while NBC had a razor-thin lead in adults 18-49 with "Dateline" (7.1 million, 2.3/7). NBC's fortunes took a plunge at 9 p.m. with a fresh episode of "Tommy Lee Goes to College" (4.2 million, 1.8/5) and the 9:30 p.m. encore of "The Office" (3.2 million, 1.3/3).

ABC was wall-to-wall reruns, highlighted by the 9 p.m. installment of "According to Jim" (6.3 million, 2.3/6). Fox did good business by repeat standards with 8 p.m. drama "House" (6.3 million, 2.2/7) and the 9 p.m. encore of Monday's episode of new drama "Prison Break" (6.3 million, 2.5/6).

CBS won the night overall by a comfortable margin with an average of 7.3 million viewers and 2.9/8 in adults 18-49.
