FOX Goes 'Skating' with B-Listers

(Posted September 6, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

LOS ANGELES ( You've seen Evander Holyfield and Rachel Hunter ballroom dance, and apparently you really enjoyed that. Now, FOX is hoping you'll want just as badly to see another group of low-wattage famous people in fancy costumes -- on ice.

The network has given the go-ahead to the self-explanatory "Skating with Celebrities," which will aim to do for non-Olympic figure skating what ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" did for competitive ballroom dancing. As with the ABC show, the term "celebrities" is relative.

The six-episode series will feature six kinda-famous people -- Kristy Swanson ("Dude, Where's My Car?"), Todd Bridges ("Diff'rent Strokes," "Celebrity Boxing"), Dave Coulier ("Full House," "The Surreal Life"), singer/actress Deborah Gibson, former Olympic decathlon champ/Wheaties pitchman Bruce Jenner and TV's Jillian Barberie ("Good Day Live") -- trying to axel and Salchow their way to a figure-skating title. Each celeb will be paired with professional skater -- among them former Olympians Nancy Kerrigan, Tai Babalonia and Kurt Browning.

Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton will host "Skating," which hasn't been slotted onto the FOX schedule yet. Fellow Olympian Dorothy Hamill will serve as one of the judges. Arthur Smith and Kent Weed ("The Swan," "Hell's Kitchen") are executive producing.
