MTV's next real world: hi-def network

(Posted September 14, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

MTV Networks will launch its first high-definition channel in January, the Viacom cable division said Tuesday.

Called MHD, the network will be a mix of music-related programming derived from channels MTV, VH1 and CMT. Original programming also will be created for MHD, including music video countdown shows, artist interviews and concert events. Carriage details were not disclosed.

"MTV Unplugged," "VH1 Storytellers" and "CMT Crossroads" are among the programs that will be harvested from MTV Networks.

MTV Networks is the latest cable division to combine assets from its stable of channels into one HD channel rather than launch a single channel brand on HD. Fox Networks Group and NBC Universal Cable have employed similar strategies.
