'Dallas' Matriarch Miss Ellie Dies at 82

LOS ANGELES ( Barbara Bel Geddes, best known for playing the martyred matriarch Miss Ellie on "Dallas," died Monday, Aug. 8 at the age of 82.

The Emmy-winning actress of stage and screen died of lung cancer in her Northeast Harbor, Maine home, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. She is the latest TV personality who has died of the disease. ABC anchor Peter Jennings passed away after a four-month battle with lung cancer on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Bel Geddes was born on Halloween in 1922 in New York City. Raised by theatrical designer Norman Bel Geddes, she began her stage career at 18 and hit Broadway a year later. She made her film debut opposite Henry Fonda and Vincent Price in 1947's "The Long Night" and in 1948 she gained attention and an Oscar nomination for her role in "I Remember Mama."
