'West Wing' Emmy Winner Spencer Dies

(Posted December 23, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

John Spencer, a veteran character actor best known for his Emmy-winning work on NBC's "The West Wing" died on Friday morning of a heart attack. Spencer was four days shy of his 59th birthday.

Spencer began playing Leo McGarry, chief of staff to President Bartlet (Martin Sheen), when the show first premiered in 1999. The part, a straight-talking recovering alcoholic who, in an unfortunate twist, had to leave his job after a heart attack, led to five Emmy nominations for best supporting actor, including a win in 2002.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend John Spencer," says a joint statement from NBC and Warner Bros. Television. "John was a remarkable man with enormous talent and beloved by everyone who had the privilege of working with him on 'The West Wing.' Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this most difficult time. He will be greatly missed."
