 What happened to UPN 38?
The downfall of a “Super Station”

Written by Stephen Strong      Monday, April 14th, 2003

Classic TV on UPN38 is no more. WSBK-TV (UPN38) is the UPN affiliate for New England located in Boston, Massachusetts. Silver Spoons, I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Benson and many other fine classic TV series aired on the station. UPN 38 aired the Screen Gems Network from it’s formation until its demise in September 2002. UPN 38 is considered a “Super Station” by many satellite providers and cable companies, but why? Who Knows. The station no longer has a mix of classic TV, movies, and other unique and enjoyable programming. As far as I know UPN 38 is the only UPN affiliate to be carried on DirecTV. UPN 38 has further “localized” their stated by adding newscasts from 7:00-8:00AM and 10:00-10:30PM. Though local programming is wonderful, it takes away from classic TV programming. Starting this year UPN38 now airs some Red Sox Games (the rest of the games air on NESN). Though some would say UPN38 has gotten stronger over time, I would argue the opposite.

UPN38 was founded in 1964 and then purchased by Viacom in 2000. After the Viacom purchase UPN38 was turned away from classics and into a station concerned primarily with ratings and not with viewer interests. Hopefully in the future people living in New England will get more local access to classic TV programming.

WSBK-TV/UPN 38 is part of the Viacom Television Stations Group, part of CBS Television, a unit of Viacom, Inc.
