He is probably best known for his portrayal of the crazed high school principal, Mr. Rooney, in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Principal Rooney's obsessive quest to catch Bueller playing hookey was one of the most compelling comedy performances of the 1980s.
In 2003, he was arrested for possession of child pornography and employing a 14-year-old boy to pose for pornographic photographs. Jones pled no contest to the felony charges and was ordered to undergo counseling and register as a sex offender. In July 2004, he was arrested by Florida police after failing to notify them of his change of residence as required by sex offenders. It was later revealed on a european news program, that Jones' computer was hacked in an elaborate extorion scheme. Hackers exploited Jones' love for online poker and reportedly uploaded various materials ranging from bomb making, credit fraud tips to pornography. Whether this revelation will affect his standing in the US criminal justice system remains to be seen.
Jones currently appears in the HBO series Deadwood as newspaperman A.W. Merrick.
